Holiday Treats!

Growing up in my household there are many things to be remembered about food. My grandmother and my mother both were born and raised in the country (North Carolina). Everything has always been made from scratch, my grandmother never made a store bought cake or biscuits. We always had the real deal. Now that I am older I am real thankful to have grown up learning some of these things she taught me as a young girl. My mother definitely took after her and I am now following in her footsteps.

It is the little things that you remember at different times and today my mother and I went to the country of Virginia Beach and got some fresh Collard Greens, Kale, Hanover, sweet potatoes and they had something I remember as a child, Peach Buds. Sneaking into the candy dish to pull out a few pieces of Peach Buds. Yes, Peach Buds, they are delicious. You can only get them around this time of year and I had to pick us up a box of them today.

If you never had Peach Buds, check them out and you will be hooked and this is what they look like...Enjoy!

R.I..P

Michigan rapper MC Breed, who burst onto the national scene with the 1991 hit "Ain't No Future in Yo' Frontin'," has died at age 37.

A Washtenaw County medical examiner's spokesman says Eric Breed was pronounced dead Saturday at a friend's home in Ypsilanti, about 30 miles southwest of Detroit.

Toxicology reports are pending, but officials say no foul play is suspected.

The Detroit News and The Flint Journal say Breed had suffered from kidney failure.

Breed grew up in Flint, and "Ain't No Future in Yo' Frontin'" contained several references to the city. He moved to Atlanta in the 1990s.

Between 1991 and 2004, Breed recorded 13 albums and collaborated with artists such as Tupac Shakur.

I would like to thank Tre Stylez, the Promoter down here in VA for Def Jam, for holding it down with Funkey Flash Back. He is always showing us love and staying in contact for various avenues of business and we appreciate that.

So I get this call the last minute today from Tre saying that Ace Hood with We the Best records ran by DJ Khaled would be in town and to meet him at a local restaurant at 5pm. I got some FFB goods together and hit the town in this terrible rain. Sometimes you don't get these chances all the time to sit down face to face and meet people on a regular level. I was able to give Ace some FFB Tees and his management and surprising one of the guys had heard of us, so that is good look already. So Ace you guys enjoy those shirts. Much success in your career.

Go out and cop that Album by Ace Hood on Nov.18th

So You want a Career in the Fashion Industry? Part 2

So You want a Career in the Fashion Industry? Part 2

1. DON'T QUIT YOUR DAY JOB!- I would advise anyone just starting not to fully quit what you do to make money to keep a roof over your head and food on your table. Just take it little by little, don't swallow the entire Big Gulp! In addition to creativity, it takes money to make it in any business. Sometimes starting up you just are not sure exactly what amount of money you will spend, but spend wisely. So keep your day job, make that money and take what you can and put it towards your newly developed line.

2. The Designs-Ok, so you love designing and fashion and can lay it down on paper but you don't know the next step. If you can lay it down on paper then you must be pretty talented and will come up with some original ideas, which is most important. What you will need is for someone to put them into Adobe Illustrator for you which is a vector based design program. Vector designs give you that really clean, crisp look and no matter how much you scale the size, it will not be pixelated. In addition to get some more effects you will need Adobe Photoshop and you can just go wild in there too. Some people use Corel Draw, I never have but whatever works for you then use it. What I did is I had a guy help me learn the basics of Photoshop and then every night I would spend x amount of hours on the computer just teach myself. In addition to that I found there are tutorials on line as well. See I told you the internet has everything you need and want. So do your research for anything that comes to mind and you don't know the answer to it. Once you get the basics down you should be good to go and then you can really get down to business with the computer based side of the designs. This is what is going to get your designs from your head to the computer to the screen printer or manufacturer that will print your designs. It is a must!

3. Manufacturing- If you are starting as just a t-shirt line then start with your local screen printer. Well some people ask how do I find them, ther is something called the telephone book or YellowPages.com, once again do that research. Go visit these screen printers in your local area and ask them questions and ask to see previous goods they have printed so you can see the quality and that they are capable enough to do your designs. Check to see what their minimum order quantities are, what is the turnaround time, what kind of shirts do they print on, how many color print are they capable of doing. From their just decide who will be best for you. You can always find people online but it may be better as a newcomer to the business to deal direct with someone rather than online.

Once your orders start picking up and you have the demand and it is growing rapidly then many you want to look for manufacturers that can do cut and sew garments exactly as you want them. Starting small allows yourself time to grow and if you mess up, then you don't have big costs to handle. When you deal overseas, you may look at you get what you want quality wise, printing wise, your own size chart etc etc but have you thought about the price may be alot lower, can you handle the quantities in the thousands, do you know anything about importing, custom fees and how to get your order cleared if it gets stuck in customs. Have you done your research on the amount of the customs fees, some customs fees can be 15% hypothetically plus other fees that are incurred with customs. Just say you got a shirt made for $4 and you had a 1000 pcs made and then customs fees are 15%, you are paying $4.85 including the customs and other miscellaneous from customs. Next, you have to look at shipping costs. So how fast do you need your merchandise? On the average you are going to wait at least 30-45 days just to have the product produced. Then it will be shipped. You have a choice by air or by sea. You know air is going to be an arm and a leg, but if you can afford it and still make product especially if you are just retailing, I don't see a big problem. If you are wholesaling and need it by air to get it quickly that is when your profit is cut tremendously. Shipping changes based on oil prices, so it should be a little less today to ship than about 4 months ago. Let's just say by air on 1000 t-shirts, none of this is accurate but may be close, you pay $3500. By sea it would be less. So in the end is it worth you paying to have it done overseas. So your $4.85 shirt just jumped to $8.35 each. It is a lot to take in, but it is all common sense. If you have a higher end line you still have good room for profit margins.

4. Consultants- If all of this just does not make sense to you and you really need help from some experienced individuals, you may consider getting a consultant to help you with various ends of the business. Just pay them a fee for their services until you learn a little bit more and can do it yourself. If you would like to use our consult services, please contact us at info@funkeyflashback.com for pricing.

SO YOU WANT A CAREER IN THE FASHION INDUSTRY? Part 1

Here is some info to help some of you along that contact me everyday saying, I need to talk to you I want to start my own line. We will do this in several parts so stay tuned into our blog and become a follower so you don't miss any of this vital information. This is all information from our perspective and what we have encountered here at Funkey Flash Back. I hope this information will help you along your path. Much success! Leave comments if this was helpful to you or ask a question that we can include in the next segment.

1. Be passionate- Without passion in an industry you have a harder time making it, unless you have some serious connections to pull you through. In any area of life passion for what you are doing comes through and shines so brightly and others can see the love, time and dedication that you have for your project. Don't just do this for the money. If all you see are dollars signs and nothing else, go another direction, this game is not for you.

2. Do you have a story or great concept behind the line?- I see many people just coming up with lines any kind of junk, I must say and calling it a line. What makes customers interested in your brand is the story line or concept behind the brand. We can all have some fresh designs over and over again, but it is the story that brings them back every time. It keeps your customers interested and wanting to know what the next move will be for the brand.

3. Be original, who cares what everyone else is doing- There a million clothing companies or so called clothing companies popping up every day. Everyone that has photoshop thinks they are a designer these days, but it takes more than that. You can't just slap something together and expect people to purchase it. The problem we have with the industry especially buyers that with department stores or boutiques and so forth, is that most of them do not care about originality and this is really sad. The purpose of fashion is to be original, on the cutting edge and coming up with new designs and ideas. So you can pitch you line to a store and be totally in left field but have some really hot product and the store will say, we don't know where to put it, it is nice, but do you have some designs more like this company or that company, this year the theme is military, do you have that. This is what some of them have told us and I refuse to conform to what they want. So to all you store buyers out there, use your own brain and look at what is unique, some people in this world actually want to wear different brands and you all do not offer it to them. To everyone that is starting there line, do go around looking what others are doing, decide what you are all about and it will pull you through in the end. Why do you think Gucci, Ferragamo, LV and all these companies are successful? Originality and they start trends.

4. This is a business, you do realize that don't you?- Designing and coming up with all the idea cool ideas is fun isn't it? Well don't forget this is a business. Is your product able to be sold? Beside the fun of designing and the concepts, do you have other areas of business in place that are more crucial than your designing? Trademarks, corporation or business licenses, an accountant, a business plan and much more. All of these areas are needed to get you to the next level. It is the boring part and most of us do not want to deal with it, but it is the most important part if you like to stay in business. So get these areas in order first and foremost. If you are just a creative person, you need a person or people you trust to take care of these areas of business.

5. Business ethics- even though most people in this industry and the entertainment industry do not have any business ethics, they just don't care. I don't care who you are a millionaire, trillionaire, average joe, arrogant or whatever you are, business ethics are vital in any business. I am big on business ethics, many things drive me crazy because people are not like me and they never will be. It doesn't take a lot to go the extra mile in business. If someone calls you and leaves a message, call them back whether it is something you want to deal with or not, just nip it in the bud. If you tell someone you will do something, just do it, if you are not capable, don't take on the responsibility or if something comes up, let the person know. You have to put all PRIDE aside. A person will have more respect for you if you do what you say or come to them and let them know you cannot. This is the biggest problem I see with people in everyday life. Treat people like you want to be treated, we are all human. I see a lot of these tv reality shows of some famous people and how they treat their assistants and so forth and they expect too much of them as being one person and just the attitudes they have, it is not very becoming. I do not want to ever be like that. Never think you are better than others. If you own a store and you are not interested in a line, just let them know up front, call them back or email them, it is better than people being left in limbo. One day you may want what they have to offer and cannot get it. We here at FFB try our best to write back everyone email and phone call that is of business substance, not just junk, we don't respond to that. Always think about how you want to be treated and that is how you respond to others.

6. R&D-this means Research and Development. Instead of just emailing companies asking who they use for printing, who their manufacturers are, do yourself a little homework. We live in the age of the internet, everything is available at your fingertips, you have to dig deep. No one is going to give you this info without a fee. You have all the free info on the web. Go use it. Research and development, every company has to do it if you want to survive. It takes time, don't be in a rush to put your line out. Do it correctly and in time you will come to market. We did a lot of research and no one gave us any answers, we did not ask anyone for help. Everything we learned we learned it on our own. We don't know any insiders in the industry, we were determined and this makes us feel good, that we don't need anyone to give us anything. Before you ask questions do your homework. Learn about sizing charts, color charts and more on your own, this is really the fun of it all. If not find yourself some seminars, workshops or tradeshows to help you along. You will get a lot more out of it

Stay tuned for Part 2 in the new few days! Hope this helps some.

1st Black American President Elect, We Made History!

Last night we made History! Yesterday I did not work I just watched the elections all day long. I was quite delighted to see CNN showing Virginia numerous times and how people here really turned out to the polls despite the nasty weather we had on yesterday. It was such a blessing to see all people of all races and colors turn out to the polls yesterday whether you voted for Obama or McCain, you did your American duty.

Martin Luther King Jr, this is exactly what he has fought for all these years. All the studying we did in school on this one black man that wanted to make it right for black people and actually all American people....the RIGHT TO VOTE! I remember being a young girl and always talking to my grandmother and my mother about their lives and how it was when they were growing up. I was always saddened when they would tell me about segregation and that they could not go the same place as whites or had to use another bath room and riding the back of the bus. Although going through all of this, it never put hate in their hearts to anyone that was not black. They have always taught me to look at peoples heart and not their skin color, skin color mean nothing, we all bleed the same blood. I have taken this with me through my life. All these people fought so that you and I could have a better life today. I am truly thankful and blessed for all of these people. Them fighting enabled me to get a greater education than most kids are afforded the opportunity. I went to private and Catholic School all my life and in 99% of the cases I was the only black child in class or maybe their where less than 10 black kids in the entire school. All of this never made me forget where I came from. I have always been proud to be black no matter what or maybe how I have been treated in my lifetime. Today I have a diverse group of friends and it has made me a better person.

All of this leads me to Barack Obama, our new commander in chief and the first black American President. We say black because we see skin color. Let's not forget that this man is bi racial, his mother was Caucasion and his father was African. He spent most of his life raised by the white side of his family. So even though we say black, I am pretty sure he does not deny one of side of his heritage. That is what America is supposed to be all about, DIVERSITY. After all the accomplishments that Black Americans have made over the years from inventing the traffic light, bicycle, refrigerator, toilet and much more...who would have ever thought their would be a President of color so early in time. From young I never thought I would witness this in my lifetime. Many people were worried that the government would rig the voting so he could not win, so most of us were on edge until the end. Obama won over the state I live in, Virginia which has been a red (Republican) state for 44 years, Ohio (this was a major one), Pennsylvania, Florida and Colorado. People are ready for change and this is what Obama is destined to do for our country. This will be great for dealing with many countries overseas especially the Middle East.

Take this time and what this great man will do for our country and use it to your benefit. All the lack we had over the last 8 years, he is going to do his best to put the country in a great position. It is definitely going to be a challenge, he has a lot to clean out and 4 years is not enough time. But some of the main areas of tax breaks for $250k and under, the stimulus package increase, infusing the small business administration. So if you have a dream in your heart, this is going to be the time to work on it and let it be heard. Go out and start that business you never thought you were capable of doing on your own. Barack Obama shows us that anything is possible and that actually some people in this country have gotten over some of the racial barriers we face. There are plenty of racists out there, believe me and many are closet racist.

People all over the world were watching this election and were very satisfied with the result. There is no such thing as can't...YES WE CAN!

I must commend John McCain for taking this well and the wonderful speech he gave

May God Bless Barack Obama and the entire USA. Today is a new Day!

Krispy Kreme Doughnuts for a free star shaped doughnut

Ben & Jerry's for 1 free scoop

Don't miss out, it is not too often we get free food!

Go Out Today and Vote!

Every American citizen is urged to go out and vote today. This is the last chance that we have to make a big change in our country. Polls have been showing that many people have cast the absentee ballot as I did myself.

There is over 144,000,000 voters expected at the polls this year which is a record number and is up from 2004 voters which was 122,000,000. For some people this is the first time in their lives voting whether they just turned 18 or even some that are 80 years old are going out to vote. Everyone wants change and better life, but we as Americans have to learn to fight for what we want like they do in other countries. We cannot be passive and just sit around and hope change comes, we have to be a part of the movement.

Here in Virginia has been a red (republican) state for 44 years. This is the first time they actually feel as though there will be a change and I pray that it does.

Barack Obama will be the first person of color elected as President. For all you undecided voters, don't look at color for this election. Look at someone that can make a better place for years to come. Obama was raised in a caucasian household all of his life and represents what America is all about and that is DIVERSITY!

Go out and Rock the vote!

Over the past year the red bird (Cardinal) has been coming by my house. We will see him at the oddest times. When you look for him you cannot find him. They are so beautiful in color and it is absolutely hard to get them to stay still. This is the first time ever I was able to snap a photo. Mind you this is inside my office window. He kept turning around looking at us inside, it was really amazing.

The old people say when the red birds come by, they come to bring blessings. He always shows up when something may not be going right or you need a little uplift in spirit. When he does come by, some thing great always happens.

Thanks little red bird for dropping by our house everyday. We see you swooping and flying and coming close by to bring those gifts from heaven
